WATER
Water is very important for farming , but in this part of the world there is not very much rain ad we have to use water from the rivers . River valleys generally have good soil , but in this country they are often dry because there is not enough rain . However , in a few places there are springs of fresh water . In these places people can use the water for irrigation and grow good crops .
Now engineers are cutting canals along some of these dry river valleys . Water from the river flows along a concrete canal and irrigates all the land between the canal and the river . some of these canals will be nearly a hundred kilometers long , and they will bring water to land many kilometers wide . there are great irrigation projects in the north and east of Syria along the River Euphrates and its tributary , the River Khabur , and in the west along the Orontes . In the south engineers have dug a tunnel and cut a canal from the River Yarmuk to the Jordan valley The Lebanon has more rain than Syria and Jordan , so they do not need many projects like these , but Iraq has very little rain , and there people use river water for nearly all their crops .
Engineers are not only cutting canals for irrigation but building dams across rivers . The water drives many large dynamos , and these make electricity for our factories and homes . The engineers are changing the face of the land and every year , with the help of the canals , we get thousands of acres of new land for farming . The government is bringing prosperity to the whole country with this great work along our river valleys .
